Dance
"It is not the components that determine the whole, but the whole that determines the components. The rule and its laws, the whole and the structure, cannot be deduced from a separate acquaintance with the parts that make it up." Life a User's Manual Novel by Georges Perec.
If I change the components order, do we still receive the same impact? Is it meaningful?
The whole is not a simple sum of its parts. The human brain does not perceive through separate units that are not linked together, but only as an organized and meaningful whole. I chose the work of Henri Matisse, The Dance. I printed several copies and started cutting and playing, examine how the division affects the initial image.
What remains of the image, a clear impression or a faint trace? Can the fragments convey a coherent whole? How do we perceive that whole? I cut each piece of the image from colored glass palettes and assembled them into the final image in the order of my choice. I fired the plate in the oven to fuse the glasses and then gathered the pieces into a bubble in the hot workshop. During the process, as I rotated and heated the tool, the pieces became more distorted and expanded from hot to cold.
Cold work, fusing and blowing technique.
